McMillions: McDonald’s Monopoly Game Fraud

A friend asked me if I had heard about the documentary about McDonalds Monopoly game. I had never heard of it and immediately needed to watch it.

Have ever heard of or played the monopoly game at McDonalds? Well this show is about how you never had a chance of winning the million dollars.

Well a majority of the winners until 2001 were not real winners of the game. All the winners were fake. This story was crazy to me. The FBI received a call that 3 of the McDonald’s Monopoly winners were frauds. That is how this story begins. This was going on for so long with no one finding out. I had to know how they did it.

Spoilers ahead!

The FBI Agents try to figure out the past winners and who is doing this. They decided to ask McDonalds for help in this investigation. They tried to keep the amount of people who knew as small as possible. The FBI didn’t know if McDonalds was involved. It turns out they had no idea and they all needed to get to the bottom of this and figure out how people were getting tickets.

Everyone decides they should continue with the Monopoly game that year to find out who is behind all of this. As expected someone calls in with the winner ticket. FBI goes undercover and once they leave they hear a call he makes and admits it right there on the phone. This leads them to find out everything. They soon start to find out everyone who was involved. The more they found out, the more they found out how far back this really goes.

This happened around 2001 and now everyone is living their lives and trying to put this behind them. Most of the punishments, in my opinion, were not as bad as what I thought they would receive. The saddest part to me was at the end.

It turns out a man who worked for the marketing company called Simon Marketing was stealing the tickets. Once McDonalds found out who was involved in the fraud, the entire Simon Marketing company ended up being affected. They began to lose clients and then people lost their jobs. So many innocent people were affected by one mans actions. They had nothing to do with it but they suffered the consequences.

To me I found this documentary very interesting. I think the storyline flowed very nice in my opinion. One thing they did really well was leave you wanting more after every episode. It made you want to know what was going to happen next. Another thing that kept me watching, was wanting to figure how the guy got the tickets.

To me this is all crazy because I never heard of this monopoly scandal happening. The series is on HBO so if you need something new to watch I think you should give this a try. If you saw it, what did you think? It also raises the question, What would you do for a million dollars?
