It took me a while to watch this because I wasn’t ready for all the emotion that would come from watching this. Finally, I told myself I had to watch it because this is our history and it is important to change it and not repeat it.
This show takes place in New York City and is about the Central Park 5. These 5 boys decided to go to the park with some friends. On that same night, a woman who was jogging was raped and beaten up. Even though these boys were nowhere near where it happened, the police thought they did it. The police interrogated these boys who were 14-16 years old for hours without sleep and food. They coerced them into false confessions. They told them if they said what they wanted then they would be able to go home. That was a lie. These boys were found guilty of a crime they didn’t commit and were sent to jail for it.
When They See Us is 4 episodes about the Central Park 5 and now the Exonerated 5. These are about an hour long each. I couldn’t watch it all night. I had to pause after each episode cause it was so sad. Knowing that this was based on a true story and that these 5 boys and now men had to go through this, took a toll on my emotions. It makes you think how many other people are in jail for things they didn’t do but the world thought they were guilty.
This is currently on Netflix and I recommend watching it. I think it was shot and done very well. Ava DuVernay did a great job telling their story and making you feel their emotions as much as possible. This is a show that should be watched by everyone. If you have seen it, what did you think?
